Insights on exercise and health: higher fitness levels help in a multitude of ways: lower breast cancer risk, Type 2 Diabetes, and lower flu mortality risk.

In a recent prospective cohort study, higher cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) through exercise was associated with a significantly lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, particularly those who were classified as overweight/obese.

Another study found that higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were associated with a lower risk of incident type 2 diabetes, regardless of genetic risk. However, participants with a higher genetic risk for type 2 diabetes saw the greatest reduction in risk with MVPA. On the other hand, the use of combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) did not appear to protect against musculoskeletal conditions or injuries, and may even be associated with a higher risk of fracture and total knee arthroplasty. Lastly, engaging in both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities was associated with a lower risk of mortality from influenza and pneumonia, but exceeding seven episodes of muscle-strengthening per week increased the risk.
